Heat exchangers are devices that are designed to transfer heat between two or more fluids (i.e. liquids, vapors, or gases) of different temperatures. Depending on type of heat exchanger employed, the heat transferring process can be gas-to-gas, liquid-to-gas, or liquid-to-liquid. It occurs through a solid separator, which prevents mixing of fluids, or direct contact of fluids with each other.
One of the types of heat exchangers is plate and frame heat exchangers. These are thin, parallel plates stacked together to form broad, parallel channels. Hot and cold fluids flow through alternating channels. Plates are separated with a gasket or by welding and they may have patterns to promote turbulent flow. Plates are stacked together and additional plates may be added on gasket designs to increase the heating capacity.
The flow can be arranged as either parallel or counter flow. The large surface area afforded by plates implies that plate and frame heat exchangers can allow higher heat transfer between the two fluids, for a given volume relative to shell and tube heat exchangers.
